Beaverlodge Christmas Hampers & Food Bank
The Beaverlodge Food Bank has been in operation since before 1989. The organization evolved from the Christmas Hamper Program that was run out of the basement of the United Church. The Food Bank became organized in 1989 when there were leftovers from the Christmas Hampers of dry goods and cash. The local churches came together and organized volunteers to make up hampers to use throughout the year; hunger does not only happen at Christmas. Clients would be referred from FCSS and distribution would occur as needed.
When the Neighbourhood Resource Centre was formed in 2000 the Food Bank found a new home in the newly developed centre. In January of 2001 the volunteers of the Food Bank became a registered society with a board of 5 executive members. Registering as a non-profit society allowed the Food Bank to present charitable receipts for donations that had been made.
The evolution of the Christmas Hamper Program has allowed the generous citizens of our area help many families. The Food Bank gives out an average of 8 hampers a week as well as helping needy families out in many other ways.
Donations can be dropped off at the Neighbourhood Resource Centre, and the Food Bank is accessible through FCSS on Mondays between 10am and noon.
Our Food Bank is run solely by volunteers and they are the hardest working group at the Neighbourhood Resource Centre.
